All participants will take part for at least 2-3 weeks.
Don’t worry, on average we'll only need 3 to 5 minutes of your time a day.
If you have a menstrual cycle AND do not take hormonal contraception, you can decide to participate for another 4 months. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to research on the menstrual cycle.
Additionally, you can make the choice about how long you remain in the study as the study progresses.
The benefit for the research is greater the longer you stay in the study as this helps us understand changes in mental health and interoception over time.

Some topics, like mental health, might feel sensitive to you. You’re always free to skip questions or stop participating in the study at any time, no explanation needed.
Saying this, there are also several benefits to taking part in the study including advancing mental health research, receiving financial rewards and unlocking personal insights – click here to learn more.

Your data will be pseudonymised— this means your responses will be linked to a set of ID codes made up of random numbers and letters. This will allow you to log in to the app. It means that if you ever change device or the app uninstalls, you can log back in.
The responses you provide throughout the study will be stored separately from any personal details (like email or name) in a secure, password-protected file accessible only to the lead researchers (Dr Jennifer Murphy, Dr Rosie Donaghy).
The smartphone app stores its data in Firebase which is ISO compliant. Your data will be identifiable only by the ID codes that you will be asked to enter into the application.
Scientific reports will summarise findings, but no individuals will be identified. Your confidentiality and anonymity are guaranteed.
All data is kept pseudonymised and handled in line with UK GDPR law. You can find out more about how we use your information on the Ethical Approval and important GDPR information section of the information sheet (LINK). at https://www.surrey.ac.uk/information-management/data-protection and/or by contacting dataprotection@surrey.ac.uk.

Staying involved in the study is important, but we know life gets busy and it is expected that you will miss notifications here and there!
If your engagement drops below 70% after three reminder notifications, you won’t continue in the study.
Don’t worry—you’ll still be paid for your participation up to that point.
-
You can withdraw from the study at any point. On the homepage of the app there is a ‘withdraw’ button to click and once you confirm your withdrawal you will be removed from that point forward. If you want to remove past data, you must email us (along with your ID code) at insyncstudy@surrey.ac.uk within 7 months of you enrolling into the study.

We expect to produce scientific reports summarising the anonymised findings (no ID codes or personal information) which may be published in peer-reviewed scientific journals and websites and presented at conferences.
Anonymised data will be made available to other researchers in line with relevant legal, policy and ethical standards. This is a requirement to maximise the value of the data, improve research reproducibility and further research, and for patient and public benefit.
None of the outputs from these studies will mention individuals and therefore, will maintain your confidentiality and anonymity.
You can contact the research team to find out the results of the research once the study has ended (April 2027).
